Basic Grammar Checker

Check a passage against six basic rules: repeats, spacing, capitals and ten typos.

Basic Grammar Checker

A basic checker only. This tool checks six simple, mechanical things listed below — repeated words, extra spaces, spacing around punctuation, sentence capitalisation, and a short list of common typos. It does NOT check full grammar, verb tense, subject-verb agreement, style, or meaning, and it is not a replacement for a full grammar service or a human editor. A clean result here does not mean your text is fully correct.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you paste is sent to our server, stored, or logged. There is no account and no sign-up.

0 / 15,000 characters — limit: 15,000 characters. Text over the limit cannot be checked until it is shortened.

How to use

  1. Paste your text into the large box. The counter under it shows how many of the 15,000 characters you have used.
  2. Press "Check my text". Each finding shows its rule, its line and column, the surrounding context, and a suggested fix.
  3. Review the findings one by one. This tool never rewrites your text for you. Decide yourself whether each suggestion fits what you meant, then change your own document.
  4. Compare the cleaned-up copy with your original side by side. It applies only the six listed rules — it does not improve wording, tone, or meaning — and you can copy it if you want it.
  5. Try "Load sample" to see every rule fire on one short fictional paragraph, including a web address that is deliberately left untouched.

Worked example

Load sample fills the box with a short fictional note: "This is is a sample note. it shows how the basic checker works. Visit example.com for details and send teh draft to the adress on file. The report occured last week.Next steps are listed below." The checker reports seven findings: the repeated word "is is", the lowercase sentence start "it", the double space before "and", the typos "teh", "adress" and "occured", and the missing space in "week.Next". The web address example.com is not flagged and not changed, and the cleaned-up copy reads: "This is a sample note. It shows how the basic checker works. Visit example.com for details and send the draft to the address on file. The report occurred last week. Next steps are listed below."

Limitations

This is a basic checker, and its limits are the point. It does NOT check full grammar: it cannot judge verb tense, subject-verb agreement, word choice, sentence structure, style, tone, or meaning. A sentence can pass all six rules and still be wrong, unclear, or say something you did not mean — for example, "Their going to the store" passes every rule here because "Their" is a correctly spelled word, even though the meaning is off. The typo list is deliberately short: it covers ten common misspellings and nothing else, so most real spelling mistakes will not be caught. The checker also cannot tell whether a repeated word is a mistake or intentional, as in quoted speech or emphasis, so every finding is a suggestion for you to judge, not a correction to accept blindly. For anything that matters — a job application, a published article, a legal or academic document — have a human editor, or a full grammar service, review it after this basic pass.

Exactly what this checker checks: (1) repeated words, (2) double or multiple spaces, (3) spaces before punctuation, (4) missing spaces after sentence punctuation, (5) sentences not starting with a capital letter, (6) ten listed common typos. Exactly what it does not check: full grammar, verb tense, subject-verb agreement, spelling beyond the ten listed typos, word choice, style, tone, clarity, facts, or meaning.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a complete grammar checker?

No. It is a basic checker that runs six simple, mechanical rules only. It does not check full grammar, verb tense, subject-verb agreement, style, or meaning, and it is not a replacement for a full grammar service or a human editor.

What exactly does it check?

Only six things: repeated words ("the the"), double or multiple spaces, spaces before punctuation, missing spaces after sentence punctuation, sentences not starting with a capital letter, and ten common typos (teh, recieve, adress, occured, seperate, definately, untill, goverment, enviroment, neccessary). Anything else is out of scope.

Why does it not fix my text automatically?

Because an automatic rewrite can change what you meant. The tool lists each finding with a suggested fix and shows a cleaned-up copy that applies only the six rules, side by side with your original, so you stay in control and apply changes yourself.

Why was my web address or number left alone?

Web addresses, email addresses, and numbers are deliberately protected. A dot inside "example.com" or "3.14" is not sentence punctuation, so the spacing rules skip those spans instead of mangling them.

Is my pasted text sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser with no network requests during use. Your text stays on your device, is not uploaded, stored, or logged, and there is no account or sign-up.

What is the character limit?

15,000 characters. The live counter under the box shows your current count. If you paste more than that, you will see a plain message asking you to shorten the text before checking.
