Worked example
Driving 12000 units a year at 30 per gallon and 3.50 per gallon costs 400 x 3.50 = 1400 in petrol. The electric car uses 120 x 30 = 3600 kWh at 0.15 = 540, so the saving is 1400 - 540 = 860 per year.

Frequently asked questions
Does this include the cost of buying the car?
No. It compares running fuel costs only; purchase price and finance are separate and often much larger.
Why do I enter distance per gallon and kWh per 100 units?
Those are the two economy figures most drivers already know, and they keep the comparison in the same distance units you drive.
