How to use this tool
- Enter a value and pick its unit. The table updates as you type.
- Read across the table for the same volume in each unit.
- Use Load sample to see 1 US gallon worked through.
Worked example
Enter 1 and choose US gallons. The table shows 3.785412 litres and 128 US fluid ounces — the exact US gallon definition (231 cubic inches) worked through. Note the Imperial gallon row reads 0.832674: a US gallon is smaller than an Imperial gallon, so mixing them up understates a fuel or paint quantity by about 17%.
What this tool does not do / Limits
This tool converts volumes only. It does not convert a volume to a weight (that needs the liquid's density), and it does not cover the Imperial fluid ounce (28.413 mL, slightly larger than the US fluid ounce used here) or the dry gallon.
Frequently asked questions
Why are US and Imperial gallons different?
They were defined from different standards: the US gallon is 231 cubic inches, while the Imperial gallon was defined as the volume of 10 pounds of water. They have differed since the 1820s.
Is a litre the same as a cubic decimetre?
Yes, exactly: one litre is one cubic decimetre, which is 1,000 cubic centimetres.
