AI Token Counter
How to use this tool
- Paste the text you plan to send to an AI tool.
- Press Estimate to see words, characters and an approximate token count.
- Use the range, not the single number, when checking against a model's limit.
Worked example
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. has 44 characters and 9 words, so the estimate is 11 tokens (44 / 4), with a rough range of 8–14.
What this tool does not do / Limits
This is an approximation only: it does not run any model's tokenizer, so it cannot give exact counts for GPT, Claude, Gemini or any other model. Non-English text, code and unusual punctuation diverge further from the 4-characters-per-token rule — always leave headroom below a model's limit.
Frequently asked questions
Why not an exact count?
Because each model tokenizes differently and tokenizers are large model-specific tables; claiming an exact count without running one would be false.
Is the estimate safer for English or code?
English prose is closest to the rule of thumb; code, with its symbols and indentation, usually tokenizes into more tokens than characters / 4 suggests.
