Vector Database Storage Calculator

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the vector count, dimensions and numeric format, plus any index overhead percentage.
  2. Press Generate. The tool multiplies count x dimensions x bytes per value, adds overhead, and converts the total.
  3. Use Load sample for 1,000,000 vectors of 1,536 float32 dimensions, or Clear to start again.

Worked example

For 1,000,000 vectors x 1,536 dimensions x 4 bytes (float32) with 0% overhead, the total is 6,144,000,000 bytes, which is 6.14 GB (decimal) or 5.72 GiB (binary).

What this tool does not do / Limits

This estimates raw vector bytes plus the overhead percentage you enter. Real index files also hold metadata, IDs and graph structures that vary by database and settings, so treat the result as a planning estimate, not a quoted disk size.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GB and GiB?

GB divides by 1,000,000,000 (decimal, as disk makers quote) while GiB divides by 1,073,741,824 (binary, as operating systems often show). The same bytes give a smaller GiB number.

Why does float16 halve the size?

float16 stores each number in 2 bytes instead of float32's 4, so the same vectors take half the raw space — at the cost of lower numeric precision.
