Text Expansion

How to use this tool

  1. Paste or type your text containing abbreviations such as FYI, ETA, TBD or ASAP.
  2. Press Generate. Each known abbreviation is replaced with its full form; unknown words are left unchanged.
  3. Use Load sample for a short example, or Clear to start again.

Worked example

For the input “FYI, the ETA is TBD.” the output is “For your information, the estimated time of arrival is to be decided.”

What this tool does not do / Limits

Only the abbreviations listed on this page are expanded, and each is expanded in its most common sense only. A word that means something else in your context (for example, a company-specific code) will still be expanded, so read the result before you use it.

Frequently asked questions

Which abbreviations does it expand?

FYI, ETA, TBD, ASAP, BTW, IMO, w/, b/c, pls, thx, approx., e.g. and i.e. — each to its most common full form. Anything else is left exactly as typed.

Does it change my wording or punctuation?

No. It only swaps the listed abbreviations for their full forms and leaves every other word, comma and full stop untouched.
