How to use this tool

  2. Enter how many seconds it stays on screen.
  3. Press Generate, or Load sample for a 37-character line over 2 seconds.

Worked example

A 37-character line shown for 2 seconds reads at 37 / 2 = 18.5 characters per second, which this tool rates as acceptable, but brisk.

What this tool does not do / Limits

This checker counts every character, including spaces and punctuation, and uses fixed pace bands. It does not account for viewer age, language familiarity or on-screen action competing for attention.

Frequently asked questions

What pace counts as comfortable?

At or below 17 characters per second in this tool. From 17 to 20 is acceptable but brisk, and above 20 is flagged as too fast for most readers.

Are spaces counted?

Yes. Spaces and punctuation are characters a reader must process, so they are included in the count.
