How to use this tool
- Enter the total vertical rise in inches.
- Enter your desired riser height and the tread depth.
- Press Generate to see the step count, actual riser height and total run.
Worked example
With a total rise of 108 inches and a desired riser of 7 inches, steps are 108 / 7 = 15.43 rounded up to 16, actual riser is 108 / 16 = 6.75 inches, and total run is 16 x 10 = 160.00 inches.
What this tool does not do / Limits
This is a layout estimate only. It does not check building codes, headroom, landings, handrails or structural safety, so check local rules before building.
Frequently asked questions
Why round the step count up?
Steps must be whole, and rounding up keeps each riser at or below the desired height.
Is total run the same as floor space needed?
It is the horizontal length of the steps themselves; landings and clearances need extra space.
