Worked example
For 'The cat sat. The dog ran fast today.' there are 2 sentences and 8 words in total, so the average is 4 words per sentence, and the longest sentence is 'The dog ran fast today' at 5 words.
What this tool does not do / Limits
Sentences are split on full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, so abbreviations such as 'Dr.' and decimal numbers can be miscounted as sentence ends.
Frequently asked questions
Does it judge my writing?
No. It only reports counts. A long average is a prompt to check readability yourself, not a grade.
Are headings counted as sentences?
A heading without ending punctuation joins the text around it in this simple split, so pasting headings in can shift the counts.
