Scientific Notation Converter
How to use this tool
- Enter a plain number and press Generate to see it in scientific notation.
- Or leave it blank, enter a mantissa and an exponent, and press Generate for the plain number.
- Use Load sample for 1234000, or Clear to start again.
Worked example
1234000 in scientific notation is 1.234 x 10^6, because 1.234 multiplied by 10 to the power 6 equals 1234000.
What this tool does not do / Limits
This tool rounds the mantissa to 6 decimal places, so converting a very long decimal there and back may not reproduce every trailing digit exactly.
Frequently asked questions
What is the mantissa?
The mantissa is the number in front, kept between 1 and 10 (or -10 and -1 for negative numbers), while the exponent says how many places the decimal point moves.
What happens with zero?
Zero is shown as 0 x 10^0, since no power of ten can scale another digit to zero.
