What this tool does not do / Limits

Syllables are estimated by counting vowel groups, with a silent-e adjustment, so scores are close but not exact. The scores describe surface difficulty only, not accuracy, interest or suitability for a reader.

Frequently asked questions

What does a high Reading Ease score mean?

Higher means easier to read: 90-100 is very easy, 60-70 is plain English, and below 30 is very hard.

Why is the syllable count estimated?

Exact syllables need a dictionary; vowel-group counting is a standard approximation that is close for most ordinary words.
