NPV Calculator

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the discount rate and the initial investment.
  2. Enter the future cash flows as numbers separated by commas, one per year.
  3. Press Generate to see the present value of inflows and the NPV.

Worked example

At a 10% discount rate with an initial investment of 1000 and inflows of 300, 400 and 500, the present value is 300/1.1 + 400/1.21 + 500/1.331 = 978.96, so NPV is 978.96 - 1000 = -21.04.

What this tool does not do / Limits

This is an estimate from the numbers you enter, not financial advice. It assumes each cash flow arrives at the end of its year and ignores tax, risk beyond the discount rate, and cash flows after the last year entered.

Frequently asked questions

What does a negative NPV mean?

It means the project returns less than the discount rate requires, so on these numbers alone it would not clear that hurdle.

Why does the discount rate matter so much?

A higher rate shrinks the present value of later cash flows more, so the same project can flip from positive to negative NPV as the rate rises.
