JSON to YAML Converter

How to use this tool

  1. Paste valid JSON into the box.
  2. Click Run to see the YAML equivalent, indented two spaces per level.
  3. Copy the result into your configuration file.

Worked example

The sample {"name": "Ada", "age": 36, "tags": ["admin", "editor"]} converts to name: Ada on one line, age: 36 on the next, then tags: followed by two dash lines — exactly the YAML most config files expect.

What this tool does not do / Limits

YAML output uses plain scalars wherever safe and quotes strings that would otherwise be misread (numbers, booleans, null, or strings containing a colon or hash). It does not preserve JSON key order beyond the order given, and it does not emit YAML anchors, tags or multi-line block scalars.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a string quoted in the output?

Because without quotes YAML would read it as a different type — for example the string "yes" or "123" — or the colon inside it would break parsing. Quoting keeps the value exactly as it was.

Can I convert YAML back to JSON here?

Not with this tool; it converts JSON to YAML only. Paste the result back into a JSON tool only after converting it with a YAML parser elsewhere.
