Inductor Color Code Calculator

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the first two band digits and the multiplier exponent.
  2. Select the tolerance band, then press Generate.
  3. Use Load sample for brown, black, red (1, 0, multiplier 100) with gold tolerance.

Worked example

Digits 1 and 0 with a multiplier of 10^2 give 10 x 100 = 1,000 microhenries, which is 1.00 millihenries, with a 5% tolerance from the gold band.

What this tool does not do / Limits

This decodes the common four-band inductor code. Some inductors use different marking systems, and measured inductance also depends on frequency and core, so check the datasheet for critical circuits.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the value in microhenries?

The two digits times the multiplier give microhenries by convention for this colour code.

What does the tolerance mean?

It is how far the actual inductance may sit from the marked value; 5% on 1,000 microhenries is 950 to 1,050.
