IBAN Format Guide
How to use this tool
- Type or paste an IBAN, with or without spaces.
- Press Generate to see its parts and the expected length for its country.
- Use Load sample for a GB IBAN of 22 characters.
Worked example
The sample GB29 NWBK 6016 1331 9268 19 is 22 characters: country GB, check digits 29, bank code NWBK, sort code 601613 and account number 31926819.
What this tool does not do / Limits
This guide explains format only. It does not check the check digits against a bank, and it cannot confirm that an account exists or belongs to anyone. For countries not in the included length list it shows the entered length without confirming it.
Frequently asked questions
What are the first four characters?
The two-letter country code followed by two check digits, then the national bank and account part.
Why do IBAN lengths differ?
Each country defines its own length and layout; GB uses 22 characters while France uses 27, for example.
