Cement and Sand Ratio Calculator

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the cement parts and sand parts of your mix ratio.
  2. Enter the finished mortar volume in cubic metres.
  3. Press Generate to see cement kilograms, bag count and sand volume.

Worked example

For a 1:4 mix and 1 cubic metre of mortar, the dry volume is 1.33 cubic metres. Cement is one fifth of that, 0.266 cubic metres, which is 383.04 kg or 7.66 bags of 50 kg, and sand is 1.06 cubic metres.

What this tool does not do / Limits

This is a planning estimate using a 1.33 dry-volume factor, cement at 1,440 kg per cubic metre and 50 kg bags. Real site needs vary with material density, wastage and the actual mix used, so allow extra for waste.

Frequently asked questions

Why multiply the volume by 1.33?

Wet mortar shrinks as it sets, so the dry ingredients take up more space than the finished mortar. The 1.33 factor is the usual planning allowance for that difference.

How many bags should I actually buy?

Round up to whole bags and add a small waste allowance. For the worked example, 7.66 bags means buying 8 bags before any waste allowance.
