Worked example
Entering transit 12345 and institution 001 gives a valid format, with routing number 000112345 (a leading 0, then the institution number, then the transit number).
What this tool does not do / Limits
This validates format only: 5 transit digits plus 3 institution digits. It does not look up any bank, and it cannot confirm that a specific bank or branch exists or that the numbers are currently in use.
Frequently asked questions
What is the routing number?
In Canada the routing number is 9 digits: a leading 0, followed by the 3-digit institution number, followed by the 5-digit transit number.
Can this confirm my branch?
No. Always confirm transit and institution numbers with the bank itself before using them for payments.
