How to use this tool

  1. Paste or type your numbers, separated by commas, spaces or line breaks.
  2. Press Generate. The tool shows the mean, median, mode, range, count and sum, plus the sorted list.
  3. Use Load sample for 4, 8, 6, 5, 7, or Clear to start again.

Worked example

For 4, 8, 6, 5, 7 the sum is 30 and the count is 5, so the mean is 6. Sorted, the list is 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, so the median is 6 and the range is 8 - 4 = 4. No value repeats, so there is no mode.

What this tool does not do / Limits

This tool works on plain numbers only; it ignores words and blank entries, and it reports no mode when every value occurs equally often. It does not compute weighted averages or standard deviation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value of the sorted list, so a single very large value moves the mean much more than the median.

Why does it sometimes say there is no mode?

The mode is the most frequent value. If every value appears once, or every value appears the same number of times, no single value qualifies.
